Luxury Nature-based Forest Trek, Erawan National Park

Duration: 3 days / 2 nights

This jungle eco-tour provides an adventurous and educational insight into the nature of Thailand’s national parks. You will venture into SE Asia's largest protected forest area on a jungle trek with an experienced naturalist, kayak down one of Kanchanaburi's mighty rivers, visit a buddhist shrine deep in the jungle, take time for some birdwatching, and go on a brief journey back in time to look at the forest's early human settlers with a visit to a nearby pre-historic cave. After a fun-packed day of adventure, you will spend a relaxing night in a local Kanchanaburi resort nestled amongst forested mountains and overlooking the impressive River Kwai.

Itinerary

Day 1:
0700 Pick up at your Kanchanaburi hotel, meet your naturalist leader, and transfer to Erawan National Park.

0900 Start the nature walk. Following some morning bird watching along the trail, you will descend into one of Erawan's many limestone depressions, surrounded on all sides by dramatic limestone mountains and containing lush evergreen forest.

1200 Arrive at the lunch camp to be greeted with a cold drink and the aroma of your Thai lunch being prepared for you by your very own field cook. Relax at the camp under a giant mosquito net before visiting a Buddhist shrine at the base of a sheer limestone cliff located deep in the forest. Meet the resident monks, and learn about their forest way of life.

1400 Depart the shrine and descend through a bamboo forest to be picked up for the short journey to your resort on the banks of the Kwai Noi River.

Overnight: Resort on the River Kwae. Walking Distance: 4-6 kms over a period of 4-6 hours. Meals: [L,D]

Day 2:
0700 Breakfast over-looking the river.

0800 Depart the resort by vehicle en route to the forest.

0900 Start out on a trek through the areas magnificent forest, on the lookout for wildlife of all sizes. Learn as you go about the area's plant and animal life from your expert leader.

1200 Arrive at our deluxe forest camp and be welcomed with a refreshing cold drink. Relax under a large mosquito net to the sounds of the forest whilst having a sumptuous traditional Thai lunch, prepared for you by your own field cook.

1330 After lunch, continue the nature trek and learn from your naturalist guide how to identify different animal sign, and sample some of the forests edible plants. Descend through the forest, keeping your eyes out for the resident great hornbills, and exist the forest.

1500 Pick up and transfer to your riverside resort, with its air-conditioned rooms and swimming pool.

Day 3:
0730 Following breakfast, depart your resort for the eastern side of Erawan National Park.

0830 The start of a kayak trip down the Kwai Yai River, passing through beautiful scenery looking out along the way for colourful birds such as the white-throated kingfisher, and reptiles such as the giant water monitor.

1100 Visit the Royal Forest Department wildlife breeding station, home to wild boar, various species of deer, and the endangered Banteng before lunch overlooking the Kwae river.

1300 Transfer by 4x4 vehicle through agricultural land and forest to a nearby cave, which contains thousands of bats and prehistoric coffins carved out of solid tree trunks.

1530 Pick up and transfer to Kanchanaburi or onward transfer to Bangkok (optional) Meals [B,L]
